ALBA GAS STATION

November 2018

Arabian International Contracting Co. WLL, (AIC), as a Bahrain based Contractor, was proud to be awarded the prestigious USD 8 million value Additional Gas Station (AGS) project which was successfully completed on time at the end of November 2018.

The Gas Station is extremely important as it is primarily dedicated to supply the gas turbines generating electricity for the new ALBA Line 6 that will make it the largest single site aluminum smelter in the World.

The AGS project was fast track successfully executed by working closely with all the stakeholders where on the ground synergies were formed in often challenging conditions including adverse weather exceeding 45 degrees Centigrade.

The Stakeholders were Alba; Banagas; Bapco; EWA; Tatweer Petroleum. The Managing Consultant was Bilfinger Tebodin, Middle East.

Ground breaking and construction work on the Gas Station commenced on 13th November 2017.  The multifaceted capabilities of AIC were brought together to include civil works, coded vessels manufacture under the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) rules, pipework, structural steelwork fabrication and erection, major electrical works, main and telemetric control room construction and fit out including a 30m high radio mast enabling signal transmissions managed by BAPCO Control System.

Soil investigations had revealed challenging rock formations, along with soft composition ground requiring soil improvement and micro-piling at below grade foundation levels.

Some 270 tons of structural steel, eight kilometers of steel piping and supports were installed by the AIC workforce, specialist engineers and project management teams eventually peaking at some two hundred and fifty personnel.

Advanced technology was used for insitu weld testing.  Phased Array Ultrasonic Testing (PAUT) is a nondestructive examination technique that utilizes a set of Ultrasonic Testing (UT) probes made up of numerous small elements, each of which is pulsed individually with computer-calculated timing. This technique can be used to inspect more complex geometries that are difficult and much slower to inspect with single probes. PAUT is used to inspect almost any material where traditional UT methods have been utilized and is often used for weld inspections and crack detection.

As a consequence of such advanced technology, third party weld testing and inspections were able to be carried out on short notice, at all hours.

Hot and cold tapping to existing main line gas piping was successfully carried out by a European specialist company, as was a requirement for a horizontally bored condensate pipe duct under an adjacent public highway to avoid interruptions to traffic flow.

Nine months after commencing the project AIC was recognized by ALBA at an award ceremony having achieved 250 000 man hours free of Lost Time Injuries (LTI) and was on target at completion with 550 000 LTI free man hours.

The ceremony was presided by Mr. Tim Murray, CEO of ALBA who presented safety awards supported by senior management and operations figures, to the AIC team.

Ribbon cutting ceremony by the CEO of ALBA, Mr. Tim Murray, officially opened the Additional Gas Supply plant and presented awards to AIC staff .
